Abstract

This study examines the economic contribution of domestic tourism in Uzbekistan, with particular attention to its effects on gross domestic product (GDP), employment, infrastructure development, and regional growth. The importance of domestic tourism became more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it contributed to sustaining tourism-related economic activity under conditions of restricted international travel. At the same time, limitations in statistical data and methodology make it difficult to provide a comprehensive assessment of its overall economic impact. The study applies a literature review covering the period 2015–2025 and a survey of 40 domestic tourists. The findings indicate that domestic tourism contributes to employment creation, small-business development, and regional economic activity, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. However, its development is constrained by regional disparities, insufficient infrastructure, and affordability-related barriers. The study recommends a comprehensive approach that combines regional tourism diversification, improvements in transport and digital infrastructure, greater accessibility for domestic travellers, and stronger participation of small and medium-sized enterprises in tourism development. These measures may enhance the role of domestic tourism as an instrument for inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Uzbekistan.
